My Name is Jorge

I’m a junior in high school.
I started going to the Boys & Girls Club of Lancaster to do community service. I’ve always loved art, so they asked me to take care of some painting. I couldn’t believe how nice they were to me.
I felt needed. So when my community service hours were complete, I just kept coming back.
Now, I’m President of the Keystone Club. We’re a group of teens who help staff plan and run activities. Having a sense of ownership and responsibility teaches us to become productive citizens. I’m also a junior staff member. As the art director, my first assignment was to sign a thank you card. Now, I paint murals.
I love to see the kids get involved and to help them express their energy through art. I’ve become a role model and the younger kids look up to me. It feels good. I know I’m making an impact. I think about it everywhere I go.
I come here every day after school. It keeps me busy, and I like that. I’m never ready to leave. The club is the place I inhabit. But it’s also important for me to go beyond the walls and into the community, to get kids into programs like this, off the street, to give them the resources to become productive citizens. Everyone should have the experience I’ve had.
If it wasn’t for the club, I don’t know where I’d be. Since I’ve been at the club I’ve broken out of my shell and I’m developing a portfolio of my work. I am determined to go to college.
One day I want to be an architect, but right now I’m building my neighborhood. Giving back for the opportunities that I’ve been given, that’s “how I LIVE UNITED.”
