Teen Talk –Twice a month, teens have the opportunity to take part in a discussion with professional staff and other community leaders.  The topics of discussion range from life at home, drugs & alcohol usage among teens and the recent threat of gang involvement among teens in our surrounding neighborhoods.  Club teens enjoy participating in these discussions since it gives them a chance to voice their opinions. Teens also have the opportunity to express their program needs Teens also have the opportunity to express their program needs and interest.  These discussions give staff a better understanding of what programs and activities our teens are looking for at the club.  A total of 500 members participated in these discussions.   The ratio of gender in discussions is about 50/50.

Torch Club - Younger members perform community service projects and clubhouse projects designed to enhance their sense of influence within the Club and community.  A total of 50 members have been Torch Club participants in 2006.   Torch Club members learn to elect officers and work together to implement activities in four areas: service to Club and community, education, health and fitness and social recreation.  Torch Club participants have set many goals for themselves and their community.

Program Outline –Each year, Torch Club members from all over the country take part in a service-learning experience through the National Torch Club Project.  Torch Club participants have been working with the Lancaster Conservancy to Protect our surrounding National Parks.  Participating in recycling projects here in the city of Lancaster to cleaning streams in Pequea Township, Torch club members learn the importance of involving themselves in order to make a difference.  As youth leaders of the Boy & Girls Club Movement, Keystone and Torch club members are united in a common mission to service those who need us most.  Torch club members are participating in a service project called Malaria No More to raise awareness of and help combat this epidemic.  A largely epidemic, this disease kills more than 3000 children a day in Africa.   Torch Clubs have raised enough money to purchase 120 life-saving bed nets, which help families in Africa protect themselves of deadly mosquitos for 3 to 5 years.  Our efforts combined with other Torch Club participants continue to strive for a better world for ALL children.

Teen Hero Awards: Local Teen Hero Ciara Pagan has been selected as a recipient of the Teen Hero Awards presented by Taco Bell Foundation.  The award offers $5,000 to a charity of Ciara’s choice, and as a longtime member of the Boys & Girls Club of Lancaster, it is most fitting that they have been selected as the recipient.  The award was given to teens who have made a positive impact through volunteer work. Learn more about The Teen Hero Awards. >>
